Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin To Move Funding From DACA Students to Virginia HBCUs

0

A new Virginia budget redirects $10 million in funding from DACA students to HBCUs in the state.

The funding originally supported DACA students, often referred to as DREAMers, who are not eligible for federal and state funding such as loans and grants. Instead, nearly half of the funds will be distributed to the two public HBCUs in the state, Virginia State University and Norfolk State University. The other half will be used to increase tuition assistance for HBCU students.

The bill was passed through the Virginia State House and Senate. In July, The budget was signed by Governor Glenn Youngkin.

While many may see the extra funding for HBCUs as a victory, the Virginia State Government has received criticism for splitting the minority community.

“The money is redirected in a way that attempts to pit communities of color against one another and perpetuates a false scarcity problem. Both items can and should be funded,” said the Virginia Legislative Black Caucus in a statement regarding the governor’s new budget amendments.

The bill appears to correct the historical underfunding of HBCUs by the state and the Federal Government. Earlier this year, Forbes reported that Virginia State alone has been nearly $148 million underfunded by the Virginia State Government since 1987.

Yet, the American Rescue Plan funded the university around only $50,000 through the American Rescue Plan. In total, the five HBCUs in Virginia received over $141 million to assist their students.

Over the years there have been strides to highlight the intersectionality of DACA recipients and HBCU students. In 2016, Delaware State University became the first HBCU to participate in TheDream.us, a scholarship for DREAMers. The Thurgood Marshall Fund also has voiced their support for the students.

At this time, none of the Virginia HBCUs has released a statement regarding the funding.

NBA Legend & Black History Icon Bill Russell Passes Away At Age 88

0

We are sadden to report that 11-time NBA Champion & Civil Rights icon Bill Russell has passed away at age 88. The news was first broken from Bill Russell’s official tribute account at 1:09 PM EST today. Russell was just recently named to the NBA 75 Greatest Players of all-time list and the NBA Finals MVP award was renamed in his honor on February 14, 2009.

Born February 12, 1934 in West Monroe, Louisiana in the Jim Crow South, Russell fell in love with basketball at a young age. He was an amazing athlete, but his lack of understanding of the game at his age lead to a steep learning curve. After encouragement from McClymonds High School head coach George Powles, he worked on his basketball fundamentals. This led to him becoming a stall-worth defensive presence with his amazing jumping ability and length. He became a student of defense, studying other players footwork and movements to determine how to best prevent them from scoring.

He played collegiate basketball at University of San Francisco, where he and his black teammates endured racial harassment in home and road environments. Sometimes, hotels and businesses in areas in which the team played refused to admit Russell and his teammates. He overcame the societal ills and led University of San Francisco to back-to-back NCAA Championship wins in 1955 & 1956. Russell also was initiated into the Gamma Alpha Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated in 1955.

Russell joined the Boston Celtics in 1956, having not being able to play for the Celtics as a drafted rookie until December of that year due to him serving as the captain of the US Olympic Basketball Team. Russell went on to lead the Celtics to 8 straight NBA Championships from 1958-1966. This feat has yet to be duplicated in modern day sports. Russell became the first Black head coach in NBA history when Red Auerbach appointed him as a player-coach. Russell quipped to the media at the time, “I wasn’t offered the job because I am a Negro, I was offered it because Red figured I could do it.” Russell won two championships as a player-coach, one of which was won during the 8-championship run. In today’s NBA, 15 of the league’s 30 teams have black coaches including Russell’s Celtics with Ime Udoka.

Russell is the most decorated sports athlete in North American sports. He won 11 championships as a player, 5 NBA MVP awards (3 of which he won consecutively from 1961-1963). He was a 3-time All-NBA First Team & 8-time All-NBA Second Team player. He was also the 2010 recipient of the Medal Of Freedom from President Barack Obama.

Bill Russell was Black History personified. None the accomplishments written in this article can state the impact of his life and the advancement of African-Americans in collegiate and professional sports. He will be missed and his legacy will forever live on.

NBA Legend Charles Barkley Donates $1 Million To Spelman College, Continues Tradition Of Supporting HBCUs

0

NBA Legend Charles Barkley is larger than life. He’s a hall-of-fame basketball player, being featured on the NBA’s top 50 & top 75 greatest players lists. He’s also revolutionized sports broadcasting as the no-filter, hilarious centerpiece of the Emmy-award winning Inside The NBA studio show on TNT. His most impressive career exploits, however, is away from the sports world. Barkley is a noted philanthropist, using his wealth to give to various charities around the nation and institutions of higher learning.

Barkley is an acclaimed alumnus of Auburn University, having donated millions of dollars to the institution in recent years. He also has a penchant for donating to HBCUs, as he has given $1 million dollars to Tuskegee, Morehouse, Alabama A&M, Morehouse and Clark Atlanta. Just this month, as reported by the Atlanta Journal Constitution’s Ernie Suggs, he added Spelman College as the latest historically black college to receive a $1 million dollar donation. According to Barkley, he donated because of Spelman Student Leader Jordyn Hudson. Jordyn’s father John is Barkley’s longtime business partners.

Barkley spoke to local Alabama media outlet AL.com about his motivation behind the donation, saying, “John has been a great mentor, a great friend and a great business partner. I was ready to do another HBCU and with his daughter doing great things at Spelman, so I told him, ‘Why not there?’”

Jordyn currently serves as SGA Sophomore Class president, winning the position in the Spring Elections. Spelman, ranked in consecutive years by the US News & World Report as the #1 HBCU in the nation, is undergoing several changes. The college just appointed  Helene Gayle as it’s 11th President in April and announced a $250 million dollar funding campaign called “Spelman Ascends” in 2021 to expand educational offerings. The donation by Charles Barkley is certainly a step in the right direction for Spelman college as it continues to grow and thrive.

Disney Creates Storytellers Fund For Howard University, Will Build Collaborative Space On Campus

0

After becoming Essence Festival’s 2022 streaming partner via Hulu, the Walt Disney Company has decided to further invest into the Black Community. Disney announced at the annual event for the black owned publication that they are partnering with Howard University in a multi-year deal to create the Digital Storytellers Fund. Disney will also fund the creation of creative collaborative spaces on campus housed in the Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts and the Cathy Hughes School of Communication.

The fund aims to create opportunities for emerging media professionals and creatives at The Mecca, designated by Disney as “historically underrepresented students”. Howard is the first school where Disney has created this fund. According to a press release secured by HBCU Pulse, the Disney Storytellers Fund will:
-Provide stipends over a five-year period for student projects focused on storytelling across a variety of media including animation, digital design, gaming, journalism, live action, performing arts, product design, visual design, virtual reality and more.
-Provide speakers and mentors to students in the program to spark interest in these fields and help them build the skills necessary for a future career in entertainment
-Assist in building skills necessary for future careers in entertainment
-Assist students in securing fellowships, internships, and full-time roles

Executive Vice President of Corporate Social Responsibility at Disney Jennifer Cohen spoke about the purpose of the Storytellers Fund and how she believes it will help Howard by saying, “Across Disney’s brands, we are working to amplify underrepresented voices and untold stories. The Disney Storytellers Fund at Howard will help us support students and the innovation and creativity that the university has cultivated for more than 150 years. We are excited to help the next generation of Black storytellers bring their ideas to life.”

Phylicia Rashad, dean of the Chadwick A. Boseman College of Fine Arts, also chimed in, saying “Our students at the College of Fine Arts find their creative expression in many ways – in the performing arts, in animation, in the design of the products that we use in life. The Disney Storytellers Fund is a great support for our emerging artists as they explore and develop their potential within and across disciplines.”

The Disney Storytellers Fund is a great initiative to increase diversity in the entertainment and media industries. It also will help many communications graduates at Howard University find job placement upon matriculation. We at HBCU Pulse look forward to seeing the success that the program creates.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis Unveils Policies That Could Negatively Impact HBCUs

0
Ron DeSantis speaks during the Conservative Political Action Conference in Orlando, Fla., on Feb. 24, 2022.

For the past year, Florida’s education system has been news around the country. Ron DeSantis, Florida Governor & 2024 Republican Presidential hopeful, introduced the “Stop W.O.K.E Act” (W.O.K.E standing for “Stop the Wrongs to Our Kids and Employees”) in attempts to what he says will prevent, “Florida tax dollars to be spent teaching kids to hate our country or to hate each other.” Now DeSantis wants to extend the “Stop W.O.K.E” act to public universities in Florida. Florida A&M University is the only public HBCU in the state of Florida. This is a dangerous precedent that could be set.

Florida’s state legislature has already passed laws that’s made it harder for professors to maintain tenure, changed the way in which public universities in Florida partner with accreditation agencies and even threatened to pull funding from institutions that don’t teach about racism in American history the way that the government deems fit. Now, DeSantis wants to fight for more control of state funded universities. In draft legislation secured by independent journalist Jason Garcia, DeSantis wants to put more power over public universities in the hands of the his political appointees. He also wants politicians to control how colleges and universities are funded and even control what universities teach.

Under this legislation DeSantis would even be able to prevent university presidents from hiring professors, allowing the university Board of Trustees to control who is in the classrooms. It’s key to recognize that Florida Public Universities have their own Board Of Trustees (in which the SGA President usually serves as a member). However, these Boards are under the jurisdiction of a statewide board of governors where DeSantis appoints 14 of the 17 members. A snippet of the language in the draft legislation, per Jason Garcia, is below.

The legislation also, as reported by Inside Higher Ed, will:

  • Give more authority to the Board of Governors to investigate university presidents
  • Veto proposed budgets
  • Fire employees
  • Limit the ability of the board to raise student fees, allowing state legislatures to control more of public university money flow
  • Allow DeSantis and his office to cut funding if they deem the public university isn’t following their outlined rules.

While this isn’t a personal affront at FAMU, this opens the door for attacks to be made on the essence of what HBCUs were built upon. At HBCUs, we always say that we learn about history in ways that we weren’t able to in the K-12 Public School System. This legislation could augment that, considering the true rendering of the history of black people in this country “Critical Race Theory”. This also is a harrowing precedent for other Rebublican led states with public HBCUs such as Georgia, Texas, Mississippi, Alabama and South Carolina.

This move by DeSantis is reminiscent of the effort of members of Georgia’s State Senate in 2019 to merge Fort Valley State University, Albany State University and Savannah State University to form the Georgia A&M University system. The move, which was also supported by Democrats in the State Senate such as Lester Jackson, would’ve put the proposed GAMU system in the power of the Governor who could appoint members to the board governing the HBCU system.  A story I uncovered from NPR in 2009 reported on a plan from then Governor Haley Barbour to merge Alcorn State, Jackson State and Mississippi Valley State.

Higher education should not be tampered with by the government. It allows for free thinking and respectful exchanges of thought. Legislation of this magnitude threatens the foundation of black intellectual freedom that HBCUs are built upon. This is why we must focus on what’s going on at local and state levels of government to protect our institutions and the future of our community.

Grambling Volleyball Coach Fired, Student-Athletes Added Back To Team After Investigation

0

After a lengthy investigation, Grambling State University has elected to fire head Volleyball coach Chelsey Lucas. Lucas, who didn’t coach any games for the Tigers women’s volleyball team, was let go after multiple allegations of scholarship mishandling as well as cutting 19 student-athletes from the team. Lucas, a 2007 alumna of Grambling State University, allegedly called meeting on April 4th and informed them that she wouldn’t be renewing their scholarships.

Lucas released a statement to local Louisiana news affiliate KSLA after her ouster.

“Since I started at Grambling, I have been ordered not to speak to the media. My voice has unfortunately been silenced despite the rumors and accusations about me. As a result, I have not been able to provide my side of the story about the many events that have occurred during my tenure as head volleyball coach at Grambling. I was told today, without notice or any opportunity for discussion, that I was being terminated. When I asked why I was being terminated, the administration was not able to provide me any details about why they decided to fire me.

“This termination came just days after I had requested and then had a meeting with the President to discuss the way I had been treated in recent weeks by the Athletic Director. The AD, without me knowing in advance, was invited to this meeting with the President. The AD was visibly upset at my complaints during my meeting with the President, and today I was informed that he was the one who recommended my termination. I will be working with my attorney to prepare a response, and believe that my side of this story will demonstrate that what happened to me today was not right or just.”

Vice President of Intercollegiate Athletics Dr. Trayvean Scott also spoke after her termination, saying, “The success of student-athletes and their ability to matriculate at Grambling State University is the top priority. As we move forward in this transition and commence a national search for the next coach, all volleyball student-athletes who received scholarships for the 2022-23 academic year will keep their scholarships and remain on the team. Walk-ons will also continue to hold their roster spot.”

Scott and other Grambling athletic administrators initially supported Lucas’s actions. Communications Director Brian Howard said in a statement secured by Yahoo News, “The decision, it’s her decision to make, and she’s got some quality players coming on board. I think 14 or 15 coming on board at some point, so in terms of things, I hate to say out with the old, but in with the new a little bit. Obviously, we don’t want them to be cut or lose their scholarships or whatever that might be or whatever that might look like.”

Grambling is currently conducting a national search for another Volleyball coach. HBCU Pulse will update you as more news comes out.

The CAU alum and restaurateur was recently announced as Chief Restaurant Advisor for online food delivery juggernaut Doordash. The position is the first of it’s kind in the industry and was created in the aims of building the bridge between Doordash and the restaurants that they partner with. College Hill: Celebrity Edition Gets Huge Ratings After BET Awards, Drew 854K Viewers

0

College Hill: Celebrity Edition premiered to a huge audience after the BET Awards on Sunday evening. The ViacomCBS owned network slated the first episode of College Hill to premiere after the 2022 BET Awards to coincide with the large television audience that they received that weekend. Early ratings numbers suggest that the BET Awards lead-in benefited the series immensely, as Showbuzz Daily reports that 854,000 viewers watched the premiere.

The 854K rating number means that the show was #5 in viewership on Sunday night only behind the BET Awards, Major League Baseball and 90-Day Fiance. The linear television  and it drew more viewers than Celebrity Edition Cast member Nene Leakes’s former show Real Housewives Of Atlanta. RHOA drew 722,000 viewers in primetime (8 PM EST) and it went against the BET Awards in the 8 PM-9 PM hour. Although the cast of College Hill: Celebrity Edition has drawn interest and the fact that BET brought back the franchise has people ready to watch, the BET Awards lead-in was key.

When analyzing and comparing the numbers we must put the BET Awards in it’s proper context. The awards drew in an audience for BET that it doesn’t regularly command for its typical programming. To compare ratings #’s, we searched the ratings for the 8 PM time slot for BET on Juneteenth. They showed a movie and it drew 462,000 viewers, a precipitous drop from the BET Awards numbers the week following. Real Housewives of Atlanta competed against BET’s movie showing in that timeslot and got 834,000 viewers. The BET Awards live showing was the deciding variable in the influx of viewership for the College Hill premiere while also taking 100,000+ viewers away from RHOA.

BET’s ratings number for Juneteenth (June 19) for a movie airing in the 8 PM primetime slot. (Source: Showbuzz Daily)

Also, they promoted College Hill throughout both the pre-show and actual awards ceremony. BET deploys a strategy of playing some of the BET+ content on the linear channel to draw they audience back to the streaming service. Ratings #’s at this point aren’t the best indication of the short-term success of the series but it helps with the long term strategy of building the fanbase for the show on BET+. However, the 854K viewership number is very encouraging as it does give an immediate indication to BET that there is an interest for a full reboot of the College Hill Franchise. Also, BET+ will possibly show more episodes on their linear channel in the coming months so it will be interesting to see how the series fares.

Tallahassee Creates $2.8 Million Dollar FAMU Way Project To Honor It’s Hometown HBCU

0

Tallahassee is increasing its recognition of their hometown HBCU with the creation of FAMU Way. The Blueprint Intergovernmental Agency, a joint City-County agency within the Department of Planning, Land Management and Community Enhancement (PLACE), created FAMU Way as a $2.7 Million Dollar city project in 2020. The park features the Cascade Trail Skateable park with a 225-foot-version of the Rattler Mascot.

Speaking about the Skate Park, Blueprint Chairman Nick Maddox said, “This will be somewhere where people will come together as a community. You’ll get every single demographic, every single race coming together to enjoy themselves on the south side of town.”

In a quote by FAMUAN, FAMU’s Student News Publication, senior Business Administration student said, “Growing up near FAMU, you knew that this side of town was in desperate need of beautification compared to the many establishments and districts Florida State University has. It really is amazing that my mom and I are able to drive down FAMU Way and see such beautiful landscape with our institution attached. This day has finally come.”

The FAMU Skatepark was designed by Team Pain Skate Parks. The Husband and Wife owned company worked in conjunction with kids of the community for how the park looked, saying to the Tallahassee Democrat, “It was the youth’s imagination that made this park come forward.”

The park is expected to be finished this summer.
